Genesis 10

These are the clans of the sons of Noah, according to their genealogies, in their nations, and from these the nations spread abroad on the earth after the flood. (Genesis 10:32)

When I think on what has happened so far in our Bible readings, it is amazing to see how God right after punishing mankind goes on and makes him more fruitful. They had children who had more children, they conquered lands and built cities. It’s almost like an anthill that got washed away and springs right up again next morning, bigger and better!

How great are the mercies and goodness of our Great God Jehovah! That even when we deserve nothing, he makes us productive, fruitful and successful beyond what we can by our own ingenuity. Hallelujah! I can think of assessments I passed without much study or being accepted to college when I messed up an application.

To me, this story impresses on my heart that God is good to me and everyone though we do not deserve it. It is wonder of wonders that a Holy God would give us bountifully what we do not deserve and withhold the punishment that is truly worth our sin. Surely we could never be able to withstand the wrath of God.

It is so much more amazing that He freely gave His Son to die in our place and take up our punishment so that we can have life abundantly in Him – FOR FREE!!! Surely, we deserve worse than the flood! But this kindness and mercy God shows us is over and above!

When God rebukes and chastises us, we can take heart knowing that:

And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons?
“My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord,
nor be weary when reproved by him.
For the Lord disciplines the one he loves,
and chastises every son whom he receives.” (Hebrews 12:5-6)

and that:

… his anger is but for a moment,
and his favor is for a lifetime.
Weeping may tarry for the night,
but joy comes with the morning. (Psalm 30:5)

What great comfort, courage and strength we can find in knowing that God is good in judgement and mercy to His children!
